Timely intervention is needed to control the climate impact on the livelihood of fishermen in Cape Coast, Ghana. But as is human nature, no one would be willing to take any action until they realize the gravity of the situation.
One can’t deny the productivity of the coastal lagoons. Indeed, a lot of livelihoods depend on it. Not only do they play a crucial role in maintaining intensive and extensive aquaculture exploitations, but they are also vital for supporting essential fisheries too.
What’s so special about lagoons? They are relatively shallow, isolated, protected from the sea, and have boundaries with an ecological and physical gradient. Indeed, the Ghana marine coastline, spread across 550km and a total continental shelf area of about 24,000 km2, is a major support to the marine industry. And let’s not forget, these 90 coastal lagoons along the Ghana coastline are a major source of many opportunities.
Now, let’s talk a bit about the climate impact on the livelihood of fishermen in Ghana. Due to the change in climate and pollution, fishermen have been facing difficulty meeting even their bare livelihood essentials. Indeed, even feeding their families have become a challenge. They don’t have enough means to pay their children’s school expenses or bear the hospital and utility bills.
The Drastic Decrease In Fish Catch
Keep in mind that the volume of fish caught depends on several factors, including frequency of fishing, lagoon water temperature, and similar other things. Plastic and domestic wastes in the lagoons make it even more troublesome to catch fish. And the worst part is, that most of these factors affecting fish catch are beyond the control of the fishermen.
It’s the responsibility of policymakers within the Cape Coast Metropolis to do something and deal with the drainage systems feeding pollutants into the lagoon. However, so far, no significant progress has been made in this regard.
This is why Ecoscout decided to take matters into its own hands. With no help from the authorities, we realized that it’s up to us to support the livelihood of these fishermen who have been suffering beyond imagination.
. Hence, we have decided we cannot let them suffer anymore. Join us in our endeavor to control climate impact on the livelihood of fishermen in Cape Coast Ghana.
